Remodeling Ideas For Your Bathroom, From Wall To Ceiling

When  you are preparing to tackle a bathroom remodeling project for your Tucson home, it’s important to realize that the bathroom is first and foremost a functional room.  Take a step back, and look at the space you are dealing with, and consider what kinds of materials are best suited to the space.

For example, you might like to use wallpaper. However, wallpaper will work better in a large and well-ventilated space than in a small and less airy space that will allow more condensation to accumulate.  Because dampness is a problem, particularly in older homes, it is necessary to cover the surfaces of your walls and floors that are likely to become wet or damp. Options include tile, glass, mirrors and clear plexiglass screens.

It’s important to give yourself a realistic budget for a bathroom remodeling.  Bathrooms are expensive rooms to outfit, and once you’ve found the fixtures and functional accessories you want, you may have less than you thought left for decoration.  Not to worry, there are many ways to bring back style and design on a budget, including techniques such as colored grout, painting existing tiles, pasting printed art right onto the wall without frames, or even just going with an all-white bathroom.  Again, the size of the room plays a determining role in these decisions.  For a tiny bathroom, you might be able to afford all marble.

Paint is of course always a versatile medium with which to decorate your bathroom.  For walls and ceilings, water-based paints are typically chosen, whereas oil based paints are the better choice for woodwork, making it more suitable for wiping. If your bathroom is small and prone dampness, anti fungicidal paints are now available and may be a good choicel.

Wallpaper is not tradtionally a good choice for bathrooms, unless they are large and well ventilated.  However, there are some vinyl wallpapers that are specially designed for use in bathrooms and that are now almost indistinguishable from other wallpapers.  In any case, using wallpaper for borders and cornices, and the extra strips as decorations on frames and or chair rail height borders, is doable.

A natural choice of course is tile.  Tile working is an art in itself, and can add beauty and originality to the functionality and durability naturally inherent in tile.  Vary the  colors and themes, using small mosaic tiles to create patterns and borders. Make your own original motif.

Wood paneling can also have an interesting effect in a bathroom. Tongue and groove paneling can be painted or stainedm making it an inexpensive way to decorate, and cover up unsitely or worn walls.

Finally, ceilings are an area of the room that are often overlooked but offer a great opporrtunity to make your bathroom unique.  Consider painting the wall color up over into the ceiling, creating a cocooning effect.  You’ll love it if you can look up at a sky or other original effect while reclining in your bathtub.  Sponging and stencilling are great ways to further vary your approach.  You may even wish to hire a mural painter.
