Should You Use Granite in the Kitchen?

We recently finished a Tucson kitchen remodel that’s stunning. I’ll share more about it in a later post, but it got me thinking. There are a lot of kitchen countertop options. How do you choose the one that’s right for you? Should you use granite in the kitchen?

Is Granite the Best Choice for Kitchen Counters?

Let’s get this out of the way – there’s no wrong choice when it comes to picking the finishes of your home. There are choices that offer a better return on investment (ROI). There are choices that can make your space easier to clean and maintain. There are choices that cost more, are customized or are more ‘earth friendly’. But ultimately – the right choice for your kitchen counters comes down to what you want.

That being said, let’s explore granite.

Granite Offers Bring Unquestionable Uniqueness to Your Kitchen

Granite’s an igneous rock. This means it formed naturally. It also means no two pieces of granite are alike. Even pieces that were pulled from the same area will have slightly different patterns based on how minerals shifted as the granite formed.

For many homeowners, picking out their granite can be an incredibly fun activity. There are a variety of shades and polishes from which to pick. But there are also ‘imperfections’ – small cracks from where the stone shifted overtime. Even if unperceivable to the naked eye, these ‘imperfections’ bring a uniqueness to your counters.

Granite is Scratch-Resistant

An incredibly durable material, granite is not susceptible to scratches. You won’t want to use it as a stand-in cutting board. (It’ll dull your knives.) But, it will withstand normal wear and tear extremely well.

Granite is Stain-Resistant

Don’t get me wrong, granite can stain. But in comparison to a marble or wood countertop – granite’s very stain-resistant. Spill a little red wine? Wipe it. Your toddler smeared his spaghetti all over? You’re just a wet-wipe from a clean counter.
