What’s Better, a Bedroom Addition or Moving?

If you love the area in which you live and your family is getting ready to expand, a bedroom addition offers the perfect solution to increase your space without the headache of house hunting.

It’s no secret the Tucson housing market is booming. With inventory at an all-time low and prices still on the rise, buying the ‘perfect’ home often isn’t feasible. This is especially true if you want to live in a specific neighborhood. A bedroom addition often offers the solution to creating the home you want in the neighborhood you love.

3 Keys to a Successful Bedroom Addition

1. Hire a Qualified Designer

Some homeowners go right to a builder when they want an addition. The problem is, most builders aren’t designers. It takes an immense amount of skill to make a bedroom addition look and feel like it was part of the original structure. Without this skill, your bedroom addition will often look like it’s simply an extra room tacked to the side of your home.

Not only can this disrupt the flow of your household, it can negatively affect the resale value of your home. Additionally, an experienced designer can help you fully capitalize on your remodel. For example, have you been considering a few different master bedroom closet ideas, but aren’t sure which one is right for you? Your designer can help you evaluate your options and weigh your pros and cons.

This is why I tell all of my family and friends to always work with a qualified designer – someone who is bonded, licensed, and insured. Read testimonials. View pictures of their work. And if possible, view past additions and renovation projects in person. These steps are essential to any successful home addition.

2. Set a Clear Budget

The cost of any remodel can vary widely. The larger the bedroom, the more it will cost. Big master suite additions and second-floor additions will typically be more expensive. So too will be a room addition that includes plumbing. Typically, the cost of an addition runs from $200 – $600 per square foot. Before you begin any addition, you’ll want to take a clear look at your finances and determine your budget.

Because budget can play such a substantial role in the success of your project, I highly recommend working with a designer who uses a fixed-bid budget. Fix-bid budgets ensure you know how much you’ll spend from the very beginning of your project. Few things are worse than having your home torn apart and discovering your designer has gone so far over budget your project can’t be finish.

3. Determine What Inconveniences You Can Handle

Living at home during a bedroom addition can be a noisy and dusty experience. Do you work from home? This could seriously impact your ability to conduct business. Do you have a young child who takes naps? Construction will very likely interrupt their nap schedule.

It may be you’ll want to plan your addition around a vacation. This can be an excellent way to enjoy the planning process without suffering the headache of construction.

If Tucson is your second home, you may consider updating your home while you are out of town. Or, it may be you want move out temporarily during at least a portion of your remodel.
